The work consists of 3 recordings captured at different points of the Douro river in the Iberian Peninsula.
“The Source” was recorded in the source of the river, up in the mountains of Picos de Urbion, in Northern Spain in November 2021.
“Release” was recorded in the mouth of the river, between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, in Portugal. Some 100 meters before it reaches the Atlantic Ocean. Recorded in September 2019.
“Cycle” was recorded in the river’s source, up in the mountains of Picos de Urbion in Northern Spain. The recording consists of the layering of both soundscapes “In Situ”. The sound of the source itself, and the sound of the “Release” diffused on location through a pair of portable speakers. I then recorded both soundscapes using two Oktava mk 012 microphones into a Sound Devices Mix pre 3.
This is an experiment I have been wanting to make for some years and finally managed to achieve in November 2021.
“Cycle” as in the cycle of water, of a river, and of life.
It was a great experience for me to return to Picos de Urbion (always a pleasure to be surrounded by such natural beauty), and to engage in deep listening in this manner, with both soundscapes played together at ~2200 meters above sea level, surrounded by snow covered mountains with only the sound of the river’s source and estuary.
It led me to reflect on everything in between these two separate geographical points, the cycle of water and of life.
This work is free to download, and I hope you take pleasure from these recordings.
